The Signature

As interior designers, we recognize that in today’s multi-family buildings, residents have come to expect an enhanced lifestyle and robust amenities. In the heart of Reston Town Center, The Signature was designed to appeal to the upscale renter-by-choice who is drawn to resort-style living. The branding concept of the property that supports The Signature name speaks to the individual and how they can make a multi-family residence their own. With 22,000 square feet of interior amenity-rich common areas, each resident can put their own “signature” on their living experience.

Approaching the entry, an expansive circular drive with multiple planting beds prepares one for the experience. When the front doors are open, the stately two-story lobby provides sightlines past the 24-hour concierge desk to the Garden Courtyard. The indoor-outdoor connection is reinforced by echoing the graphite metallic exterior brick as a feature in the lobby. A river-rock bed at the exterior continues at the front window line, and an indoor/outdoor fireplace encourages group gatherings in the courtyard as well as the lobby lounge.

The HDG team designed the interior communal spaces off the lobby to give residents myriad work, play, and personal-time options. There’s a row of windowed booths with powered tables for quiet work; private and semi-private conferencing areas; a cozy library facing the entry court; a garden lounge facing the interior garden’s water features; and a grand room with a demonstration kitchen, dining space, a dual-sided fireplace that anchors two seating areas; and smaller social nooks on the periphery. The leasing area, too, doubles as a meeting space for residents during non-working hours.

Art was a significant focus of the interiors, and the design team planned early for commissioned pieces. Reinforcing “The Signature” brand over the concierge desk, a large encaustic piece by local artist Susan Main incorporates signatures of famous figures throughout history who’ve lived in the Reston region, from Thomas Jefferson to Tina Fey. A custom bronze sculpture titled “Aspiration Duo” by Israeli artist Tolla Inbar graces the adjacent lobby entry. Tolla believes that “the soul is a reflection of the universe, which motivates each of us to follow an individual path.” Commissioned paintings and sculpture—mostly from local artists—fill The Signature’s public spaces Boston Properties also added a special touch with a first-floor gallery where the Greater Reston Arts Center curates rotating artist exhibits.

The 7th-floor sports lounge draws residents together for sporting events displayed across a wall of screens. They can also play billiards, shuffleboard and foosball with their neighbors, and during the warmer months, floor-to-ceiling windows open to the pool deck, which is surrounded by grill stations, individual dining areas, and multiple lounge areas that each have their own fire pit. The SkyTop offers a light-filled penthouse-level fitness center and yoga studio with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramas that stretch for miles. Residents can cool down on the rooftop terrace or join in an outdoor yoga class while enjoying 360-degree views of the lush Reston landscape.

Key Insights

The design team’s priority was ensuring that each interior space blends seamlessly with its adjacent exterior courtyard, terrace, garden, or deck. Be it the main lobby, the seventh-floor sports lounge (that leads out to the pool deck), or the rooftop fitness center, the connection to the outdoors and the stunning views of the Virginia countryside were emphasized.
